Governor’s Message – October

The past 15 days to be exact was a pretty hectic schedule for me and my spouse Johnny. Last October 1, my youngest son nico got married to his longtime high school girlfriend mich and you can just imagine the preparations that we went through and with all our balikbayan relatives coming home as is our custom and tradition, it was really something to take care of. Some stayed in our house and you all know that with balikbayans as guests you will do all you can to make them comfortable. I also slipped out of the country for 2 days to Thailand to meet up with some of my classmate governor for some more negotiations for global grants and projects partnership and knowing Bangkok, I enjoyed a little shopping and foot massage.

In between taking care of my balikbayan, I had to do meetings and plannings with our Medical and Dental Mission Team as this will involve our partners from Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corp.. We also had the great opportunity to host the lunch for PDG Bill Biddle and his team last Oct 6. They were in Manila to distribute the wheelchairs.

On the same day, we had our Execom Meeting in the afternoon and we had to host dinner and fellowship with the medical team from Taiwan who arrived that day. Right after the dinner, we have to rush home to prepare our luggage as we have an early morning flight to Gensan to start with the first leg of our medical mission. After which I only stayed overnight as I have to rushed back to Manila for the induction of Pasay Sinagtala under Champ _____. Then early morning of Oct 9 we have to travel by boat to Occ Mindoro for our Gov Visit to the 5 clubs there . Got back to Manila after 4 days and yesterday, we had the most fulfilling experience of the “Sabayang Patak” to end polio now and forever. Gratifying act indeed to see that our children gets the oral polio vaccine so we can be instrumental for them to have a life that will not fear their parents to contract this dreaded disease. For their hopes to live their dreams of freeing from the disease that might cripple them all throughout their lives and will break their simple dreams of just being healthy and strong.

My dear fellow Rotarians, the 15 days, grueling as it may seem is really nothing compared with all the accomplishments coupled with the true happiness that we got from all these activities. I thank our Lord for giving me and Johnny the energies that we can muster in all those days. Most of you asked me where I get my energy. What vitamins do I take. Honestly, I do not have vitamins, My energy I guess comes from above and the daily masses that Johnny goes to. And also my energy comes from all of you as you expect me to be an example of the many good deeds that you too are doing for your communities.

In fact, I would like to congratulate you all for you are also doing very great in all your projects. When I look up at our Viber groups, I see a lot of wonderful photos . Rest assured that I see all of them and appreciate all the wonderful activities that you have been doing.

All of these things are good Rotary stories. The wedding of my son is a family story and family is important as I always say in Rotary.

The Medical and Dental mission in Gensan, Baseco and Paco, introduced to me by PDG Edmond Aguilar is also a very good rotary story. It was chaired by SDG William Uy and SDG Ellen Landicho and spearheaded by RC Paco, RC Pasay Southeast and RC Chinatown with Champion Presidents Ed Canlas, Walter Buenaventura, Bryan Toledo and our energetic action group SDG Joyce Ambray, PP Mon Yupangco, PP Roland De Guzman, PP Lucie Medina, DES Eric, COS Belle, SDG Trixie, SDG George Ng, DCC Chair Doc Cesar Ubaldo, the many champion presidents who also co hosted and joined , the AFP Dental through the efforts of ________________and the so many volunteer doctors and dentists groups that really deserved to be commended. There was a total I guess , of more than 8000 beneficiaries in the 3 day medical and dental missions that we conducted. This is really amazing. Thank you again Champion Team for conducting this.

Our Visit also to our Mindoro Clubs opened up our hearts and minds to see how we are doing in this beautiful island of Occ Mindoro. We had the most wonderful experience from the warm welcome complete with band, to the visits to their clubs and meeting their officers and members, to the projects that were conducted with the SPED children and water project of RC Mamburao headed by Champ Lope, to the unveiling of the 4 way test marker of RC San Jose Tamaraw of Champ Mila, to the visits to our Mangyan brothers and sisters, the unveiling of the livelihood project and the end polio campaign of RC San Jose Downtown of Champ Jason, the trip to the Inasakan beach with school children waiting for us, and the tree planting, the donation of jet matic pumps, the visit to the 9 toilets offered to the mangyan village by RC San Jose of Champ Vice Gov Dianne, and to the visit to the school children and feeding of RC Sablayan Metro by Champ Che, the different inductions including Rotaractors Inductions, were all amazing and words are not enough to say thank you for all your hospitality. SDG Jon Callos and DAD Annie, thank you too for all your preparations. And thank you for all the give aways that we brought home. We hope we can visit the inasakan beach again with the boodle lunch with our other champion presidents and officers .

I would also like to commend our Manila Champion Presidents who donated the Hygiene kits and those who joined us in Mindoro. Champion Presidents MC, Willie, Jun, Wella, Dolly, Jo, Michelle and Family, Liza, Billet, Connie. And our district officers DES Eric and spouse rtn nancy, Cos Belle, SDG Bernie, SDG Ken, SDG Ramil, SDG Red, DRRE Ryan, PP Letty San Antonio, PP Dr. Ching San Luis, Adsec Sol and Mhay and Cameraman Benson.

They said we are breaking records in the district not to boast but just to commend and mention that for the very first time there were 4 governors who joined us in the visit . PDG Ernest Yuyek, DGE Odie and DGN Robert were in full support of us. Thank you very much. This shows that we are cohesive and intact in the district.

Thank you again to this wonderful journey in Mindoro. A lifetime experience which we will cherish for the rest of our lives as Rotarians.

Yesterday, was another life changing experience. We were able to give oral polio vaccine I guess to more than 600 children in Baseco and Pasay and counting more in just a day. The immunization is still going on today and for the days to come and I urge those who were not able to join us to reach out to your barangay health centers and partner with them. Thank you Champ Matthew for the hygiene kits and the bread that you sent. The pastries and the juices were donated by a balikbayan relative of ours Mr. & Mrs. David Ibanez who attended the wedding and heard of the good things that we do. Thanks too to ________ who donated the ______________.

Today, I am most grateful to all of you for being here. We have so much more to accomplish. I still appeal for your new members to be reported to the portal. To date we have a total of ______ members in our district with _______ new members. I also urgently appeal to your TRF donations. To those who pledged please do your share now so that your pins can arrive on time for our TRF Gala night on Nov. 16 to be hosted by RC Manila headed by Champ Jackie who is our AKS Member aside from AKS Bing. We are just no. 6 in the whole Philippines among the 10 districts in regards to our donations. I know we can do more . Please let us give back as it comes back to us a thousand fold.

Now, I would like to give you a story. The story is entitled :

Once upon a time all feelings and emotions went to a coastal island for a vacation. According to their nature, each was having a good time. Suddenly, a warning of an impending storm was announced and everyone was advised to evacuate the island.

The announcement caused sudden panic. All rushed to their boats. Even damaged boats were quickly repaired and commissioned for duty.

Yet, Love did not wish to flee quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened, Love realised it was time to leave. Alas, there were no boats to spare. Love looked around with hope.

Just then Prosperity passed by in a luxurious boat. Love shouted, “Prosperity, could you please take me in your boat?”

“No,” replied Prosperity, “my boat is full of precious possessions, gold and silver. There is no place for you.”

A little later Vanity came by in a beautiful boat. Again Love shouted, “Could you help me, Vanity? I am stranded and need a lift. Please take me with you.”

Vanity responded haughtily, “No, I cannot take you with me. My boat will get soiled with your muddy feet.”

Sorrow passed by after some time. Again, Love asked for help. But it was to no avail. “No, I cannot take you with me. I am so sad. I want to be by myself.”

When Happiness passed by a few minutes later, Love again called for help. But Happiness was so happy that it did not look around, hardly concerned about anyone.

Love was growing restless and dejected. Just then somebody called out, “Come Love, I will take you with me.” Love did not know who was being so magnanimous, but jumped on to the boat, greatly relieved that she would reach a safe place.

On getting off the boat, Love met Knowledge. Puzzled, Love inquired, “Knowledge, do you know who so generously gave me a lift just when no one else wished to help?”

Knowledge smiled, “Oh, that was Time.”

“And why would Time stop to pick me and take me to safety?” Love wondered.

Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and replied, “Because only Time knows your true greatness and what you are capable of. Only Love can bring peace and great happiness in this world.”

“The important message is that when we are prosperous, we overlook love. When we feel important, we forget love. Even in happiness and sorrow we forget love. Only with time do we realize the importance of love. Why wait that long? Why not make love a part of your life today?”

My dear fellow Rotarians, for almost 4 months now, we continue to share our love to others. Please let us not lose this great value in our lives. For if we practice LOVE everyday in our lives, we will continue to live a very beautiful life for our families and the communities that we serve. Thank you so much and I give you all the LOVE that I can offer as your Champion Governor and you as my Champion Team. I love you all and may the almighty bless us all as we give ourselves to others.

Mabuhay tayong lahat !
