“THE KNOCKOUT TEAM”: Rotarians Helping Others Selflessly

By PP Atty Melanio “Batas” Mauricio Jr.

“The Knockout Team”. This was the moniker given last Sunday, November 18, 2018, by Liza Vicencio Elorde, who co-owns with the Elorde family the countless Elorde Gyms and Elorde Sports Centers in the Philippines and in the world, to the officers she installed, and the different presidents who were elected by the one hundred or so Rotary Clubs under Rotary International District 3810 and who will serve with her for the years 2019-2020.

Liza was elected as the District Governor of District 3810 for those two years of Rotary service. She conducted a two-day training session with the officials and the presidents-elect of the clubs under District 3810, which covers Manila, Pasay City, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro at a posh hotel in Tagaytay City.

The training session was called “Pre-PETS” (or the Pre-Presidents Elect Training Seminar), and was envisioned to start the training and preparation of all District 3810 officers to make them effective Rotary officials when they finally assume their terms. This session was held from November 17-18, 2018, and was participated in by some 65 presidents-elect like businessmen Jackie Rodriguez (of the Rotary Club of Manila) and Rosauro Ching (of the Rotary Club of Intramuros).

A DIFFERENT STYLE OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF FOR ROTARY YEAR 2019-2020: Why did Liza chose “The Knockout Team” for her group that will lead District 3810 next year? In her speech that closed the “Pre-PETS” on November 18, 2018, she explained that it is her intention for Rotary under leadership as District Governor to knock-out, as it were, various problems afflicting the poor and the marginalized in the Philippines. These include poverty, poor health, illiteracy, and lack of satisfactory source of earning.

Liza went on to explain that she wanted to provide a different breed of service coming from Rotarians under the different clubs of Rotary International District 3810, alleviating the difficulties and sufferings being experienced day in and day out of people who are largely economically deprived and wanting in many other aspects of life. There is a need to “knockout”, as it were, the many problems in life of many of our countrymen with the help of Rotary, according to Liza, who is the daughter of the first president of the National Press Club of the Philippines, Mac Vicencio.

Because of this dream, Liza sounded a call for all Rotarians to close ranks and join hands and persevere in providing a united and concerted thrust to make all the projects lined up by Rotary International become successful and meaningful. She also urged her fellow Rotarians to be ready to do a lot of sacrifice in the days to come, so more helpless and needy citizens can be helped by Rotary.

MESSAGES FROM THE BIBLE IN THE WEE HOURS OF THE MORNING: We wish to heed a growing clamor from many of our Facebook followers today, by publishing again the Biblical messages that we have been posting every break of dawn in the Philippines. Here are some of them: “Why is there a need for us to proclaim and teach the words of Jesus? Because they will also be blessed, guided, and protected, if they will also accept and have faith in Jesus because of our proclamation.”

This is according to John 17 of the Bible: “… As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified… My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you…”

“Health and economic success will be given to those who listen to, and obey, the commands of God.” “Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies…”
